Rediscover Your Sources of Motivation

If you don’t feel like taking action toward your current goals or setting new ones, you might be experiencing a loss of motivation. And rest assured, you are not alone.
Even those who know exactly what they want and are deeply committed to their goals can sometimes experience a lack of motivation. Considering life’s ups and downs, the obstacles we face, and the simple fact that we are human, this is completely natural. So, what can you do if your motivation has dropped—or is on the verge of disappearing?
Ask yourself one honest question
Let’s say you’ve been working toward a goal for some time, but for various reasons, you feel like you’re losing motivation. The first question to ask yourself is: Do I want to put this goal aside, or do I want to reignite my motivation and keep moving forward?
When it may be time to let go
Maybe your goal isn’t realistic, doesn’t align with your values, or simply isn’t something you truly want to keep pursuing. In that case, you might take your lack of motivation as a signal to let go of that goal. Or perhaps now just isn’t the right time for you, and you’ll pause and try again later.
Reigniting the motivation you lost
But what if you want to reignite your motivation and continue moving forward with energy? In that case, revisiting your sources of motivation can be a great option. One of the easiest ways to do this is to reflect on a time when you felt truly motivated and deeply examine the key elements that drove you. Asking yourself questions like: “What kind of environment was I in back then? What kind of person was I in that moment? What skills and strengths was I using? What values was I living by? What were my relationships like, and who was supporting me? What obstacles exist today that weren’t there before?” can help bring clarity. Once you rediscover your sources of motivation, you can take intentional steps to integrate them more into your life.
